Step 2: Preparing the DX7's DM Board

Tools required: Phillips screwdriver, small flat-blade screwdriver.

2-1: Locate IC14, the ROM IC. IC14 is located near the center of the main circuit board (the DM board), as shown below. At this point you can verify whether or not your unit requires further modification before installing the RE! board. Remember, no IC15, then no extra modification necessary. If IC15 is present then your DX7 needs the extra modification as outlined in the two ROM modification procedure before continuing with the RE! board installation.

2-2: Locate IC21, a RAM IC immediately to the right of ROM IC14. Now carefully place the blade of a small flat-blade screwdriver between IC21 and its socket. Gently pry up IC21, first on one side (side A) and then on the other (side B) as shown in figure 4. Repeat the process until IC21 is freed from the socket and put the chip aside.

2-3: Now to remove IC14, the ROM IC. As with IC21, place the blade of the small flat-blade screwdriver between the IC14 and the socket and gently pry up on side A then side B, repeating until the chip is freed from the socket. Be careful not to bend the pins of the chip. Set the ROM IC aside.

2-4: Using the Phillips screwdriver, remove the screw just to the left and a little above the battery. The battery looks like a coin with a plastic cover on the edges and is marked BATT as shown.

2-5: This is not absolutely necessary, but I find it easier to install the RE! board in a DX7 if I temporarily disconnect the cartridge ribbon cable from the DM board. The cable socket marked "CRT", shown in the above picture immediately to the left of the screwdriver, is where to unplug the ribbon cable. It will be plugged back in after the RE! board is installed.

Step 3: Soldering to DM Board IC63
