Old Crow's Synth Shop -- Modification for DX7 MkI with Two ROMs

DISCLAIMER: The information contained herein is provided as-is. No warranties of any kind are expressed or implied; use of this information is solely the responsibility of the persons accessing these pages. The reader is responsible for any modifications or repairs. In other words, I cannot be held responsible if you break something.

The following instructions are only required if your DX7 MkI uses two system ROM ICs. This modification will allow you to use a single ROM IC or RE! board instead of two ROM ICs and it is only necessary for a few very early production models. Serial numbers of applicable DX7 MkI units are numbers 2660 and below. It should be noted, however, that some units may already have been modified.

In order to prevent any accidental circumstances resulting in the loss of the DX7 voices stored in the internal 32 memory locations, you should back-up or make a copy of the voices before performing this modification. If a RE! board is to be installed after this modification then the voices will be erased regardless. The tool needed for this modification are listed below:

  • A Phillips screwdriver
  • A small flat-blade screwdriver
  • A soldering iron, 30 Watt max.
  • A solder vacuuming tool or solder wick
  • Rosin-core solder
  • Needle-nose pliers

For units with two system ROM ICs (IC14 and IC15), perform the following steps:

Step 1: Opening the DX7 (MkI)
