Step 5: Finishing Up

5-1: Make sure that you don't leave any tools or materials inside the DX7 (I left the toothpick in my test unit once :). If you removed the LCD ribbon cable while installing the RE!, plug it back in now. Then close the cover, but do not put any screws in just yet.

5-2: Plug the AC power cord into a source of power, then turn the unit on. After a moment, the display should say "Welcome to E! for the DX7" for several seconds, then change to show a pathc number/voice name. NOTE: IF THE DISPLAY DOES NOT SHOW THESE MESSAGES THEN TURN THE DX7 OFF IMMEDIATELY. No display means the DX7 can't run the programs stored on the RE! board for some reason (most likely misaligned in the sockets).

If something appears wrong, unplug the machine, open the cover and go back to step 4 to check the seating of the RE! board again. Also, make sure the red and black/brown wires are properly solder to the correct pins on IC63 (refer to step 3).

5-3: After verifying the display is showing the correct start-up messages, you can proceed to initialize the new RAM areas on the RE! board. This is done by using the DX7 front panel buttons. One caution: many of the old panel button fuctions have changed as a result of using the new software. This may be confusing for some time until you get used to the new commands and parameter entry methods.

5-4: Replace the case screws. The short screw goes next to the power switch.

5-5: The initialization procedure only needs to be done one time after installing the RE! board. It does not have to be done again unless you 1) replace the battery or 2) remove and then reinstall the RE! board for some reason. The initialization procedure is as follows:

5-5-1: Disable internal memory protect and set RAM format:

a) Press the FUNCTION button once.

b) Press the OPERATOR SELECT button twice.

c) Press button 31 twice. The display should indicate the internal memory protect is OFF.
d) Press button 20 once. The display should indicate the RAM format is set to VOICE.

5-5-2: Reset ALL of the DX7 voice memories. There are now 320 voice patch memories, organized as ten banks of 32 voices each. The following list of steps must be done for each bank. Easiest is to start with RAM bank 0 and proceed from there:

a) Press the INTERNAL memory select button once.
b) Use the data +/- buttons or slider to select a RAM bank. Note there are also 8 ROM banks of preset voices. Make sure you do not have a ROM preset bank selected.
c) Press a voice button (example: press button 1 once) to make that RAM bank active.
d) Press the FUNCTION button once.
e) Press the OPERATOR SELECT button twice.
f) Press button 19 three times.
g) Answer YES to "Bank Erase?".
h) Repeat steps 5-5-2 (a) through (g) for the remaining RAM banks.

5-5-3: After the final Bank Erase, the machine will still be in the Data Erase mode. Now to clear the Input patch map:

a) Press button 19 once.
b) Answer YES to "Patch map Erase?".
c) Press button 19 once.
d) Answer YES to "Keyboard Preset Erase?".
5-5-4: Insert a RAM or ROM cartridge into the cartridge slot.

Step 6: Finishing Up
